What is Copywriting ?

Copywriting is the simple application of habitually responsive writing techniques to communicate messages and derive results. There have been a lot of commentary on copywriting and marketing communication which all share one thing in common; an effort to publicize meaningful information about products and services in texts format that trigger purchasing emotions and by effect deliver results.

Good copy is generally categorized by brevity, uniqueness, attention to audience, impeccable story-telling and emotional persuasion. I am of the opinion that Moses’ ten commandment is the very first piece of written copy although there is no exact time when this all-purpose craft began.

Copywriting was officially recognized in the 1800s, that century saw the likes of Claude Hopkins(1866), John Emory Powers(1837) widely accepted as the first copywriter. Preceding centuries produced Bruce Barton’s story driven 1919 ad detailing, Martin Conroy’s classical 1974 ad for the wall street journal, Robert Collier’s direct response emails, Gary Bencivenga, Stan Freberg and Gary Halbert, regarded as the greatest Copywriter till date.

With the Advent of the internet, search engines, SEO and e-commerce growing at 17% annually, Copywriting/ SEO-Copywriting is a necessity for businesses, organizations and startups that would survive in the competitive economic world. SEO- Copywriting drives traffic to a website  by improving search engine rankings with the use of keywords in a piece of copy.

The good news is 90% of companies in the universe employ the services of a Copywriter, you’re either making a living writing copy, engaging prospects with the help of a Copywriter or forming purchasing consideration based on written copy, one way or the other Copywriting influences everybody’s everyday life.

Remarkably, Copywriting grosses 7billion+ annually for fortune 500 companies even with various legal regulations…I wonder sometimes what it’d be like if there are no laws.
